Technology seems to be making it too easy for people to sexual harass others. When the “dating” app Tinder became available there was much controversy surrounding it as it is a completely degrading app based on appearance. The creators of the app are not excused from the title of ‘degrading’ either. The founders of Tinder were involved in a law suit that involved a female co-founder. According to International Business Times Whitney Wolfe, the former vice president of marketing for the Tinder application was harassed at work for 18 months by the creators of the app. She claimed that because there were mostly males with positions in that workplace a frat-like atmosphere was created. It “is starting to look like nothing more than an inaccessible boy's club,” says Jeff Stone, the author of the article. Wolfe was let go from her position of co-founder because Jeff Mateen, the apps chief marketing officer thought that having a female in that position would devalue the company. Mateen was also accused of calling Wolfe a “whore” before forcing her from the company.
It seems as if the tech industry is becoming a hotspot for sexual harassment against women. Because that industry is mostly males it creates a hierarchy based on gender. An actual “boys club” atmosphere is created. In these atmospheres it is easy to forget that some actions and behaviour is inappropriate. But this does not make inappropriate behaviour acceptable. According to International Business Times these atmospheres are pushing the wrong ideas about sexual assault. Sexual harassment is almost becoming permissible in these settings (Stone, 2014).
