Sexual harassment is an extremely serious situation that should not be taken lightly. Associating sexual harassment with jokes can negate from the seriousness of this social issue and can act as reinforcement if someone is contemplating being inappropriate with someone at work or school.
Attached is a video that is disguised to look like a real PSA announcement. After a couple of minutes into the video one will quickly realize it is not an official PSA. It is very inappropriate and tries to make fun of the way sexual harassment is handled in the workplace.
There is such an issue with media like this video. This video is in extremely poor taste as many people, victims and not, would find it very disrespectful and even more damaging to people who have been affected by sexual harassment.
In 2013, the satirical newspaper and online blog called The Onion published a satirical story about the abuse of a 13 year old girl which can be found here: http://www.theonion.com/articles/adolescent-girl-reaching-age-where-she-starts-expl,33551/?ref=auto. Ms. Magazine Blog criticized the website for writing such a controversial piece, “the piece seems to use sexual abuse only to elicit cheap, shock-value laughs.” (Stevens 2013). Sometimes humour used in a similar way can be effective in calling attention to things that should be changed within society or things that should be looked at in a different, more serious light. But this article seems to be one of the things that needs to be changed within society. It is an extremely offensive subject to poke fun at, especially when revolving the story around a minor and her step father.
How far is too far? What do you think about this video and the article? Is it in poor taste or is it just a harmless joke? Leave you thoughts in the comments below!
