Many organizations are taking a stand against sexual harassment and creating apps, hotlines and free information for people to seek out. One example of a new app that could change the way we look at seeking assistance in situations involving sexual harassment or abuse is an app called Not Your Baby. Not Your Baby was created by The Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children based out of Toronto. Not Your Baby allows users to report inappropriate behaviour and based on the information they provide receive tips on how to deal with it or who to get in touch with for help. The app also allows people to share their personal stories of harassment and give tips to others who may be dealing with similar situations. There is the option of remaining anonymous by putting the app on “discreet mode”. This discretion is what will encourage more people to come forward and report issues they have seen or dealt with.
A poll created by the Canadian Press in 2014 found that 4 out of 5 people who had been sexually assaulted at work did not report it to authorities or their bosses. Many people felt worried that their career or positions in the company would suffer and their reputation would be shot. Apps like Not Your Baby allow people to report these serious offences with anonymity. Anonymity is a powerful encouragement for victims of sexual harassment or abuse to report the people who have hurt them. Once they know there is support for them, they are more likely to report the problem and take action to get their lives, jobs or school back on track.
Another poll found that in the past two years, 28% of respondents, male and female experienced “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours or sexually charged talk” in the workplace (The Canadian Press, 2014).
With the help of anonymous apps like Not Your Baby, do you think these numbers will improve? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
